Both churches gather together at St Margaret’s for the Liturgy of the Palms, with the procession to St Giles’ for the Liturgy of the Passion. (Those who are unable to manage the procession should instead make their way directly to St Giles’ for 10.15am).
6:30pm – Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” at St Giles’
A beautiful liturgical performance of this medieval Latin hymn on the suffering of the Virgin Mary at the Crucifixion, with a setting composed by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi in 1736.
Monday 30th March
6:30pm – BCP Holy Communion at St Giles’ (said, with sermon)
An opportunity to receive the gift of Holy Communion according to the beautiful and penitential language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
Tuesday 31st March
8:00pm – Compline (Night Prayer) at St Giles’
A quiet, reflective service to end the day and help prepare for the rest of Holy Week.
Wednesday 1st April
7:30pm – Tenebrae Service at St Giles’
“Tenebrae” literally means “darkness”. During this moving service, candles are extinguished as we share Scripture together and reflect on the themes of darkness, sacrifice, and ultimate victory through Christ’s resurrection.
Maundy Thursday – 2nd April
2.00pm – Setting up the Garden of Repose at St Margaret’s
For young people (13+) who want to help set up the Garden ready for the evening service.
8:00pm – Liturgy of Maundy Thursday at St Margaret’s
The first service of the “Triduum” (literally “Three Days” of Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection); this service focuses on the Last Supper, Jesus’ institution of Holy Communion and his washing of the disciples’ feet.
Good Friday – 3rd April
10:00am – Hot Cross Bun Service at St Margaret’s
Particularly suitable for children under 7 years old (though all ages are welcome!). Come and learn about the Easter Story! Please note that all children must be accompanied by an adult.
10:30am – BCP Mattins (Morning Prayer) with the Litany at St Giles’
Morning Prayer today is led by St Giles’ choir according to the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, including a choral Litany.
12:00pm – Meditations and Silent Prayer before the Sacrament at St Margaret’s
For those who wish to mark the traditional full ‘three hours’ of Good Friday, the church will be open and silent for individual prayer, with meditations at each half-hour.
1:30pm – Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday at St Margaret’s
The second great service of the Triduum as we focus on the death of Jesus, with minimal ceremony and using the sacrament consecrated the previous evening.
Easter – 4th / 5th April
8:00pm (Saturday) – Liturgy of Easter at St Margaret’s
The final service of the Triduum and the climax of the entire Christian year! Beginning in darkness, we recount the mighty acts of God before we switch on the lights, make a great noise and celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. Join us afterwards as we continue our celebration with food and drink together.
