This week Eva Walters shares some reflections on the book she is reading this Lent.

This year for Lent, I was pleased to find a copy of Michele Obama’s “The Light We Carry” in Oxfam. It was written in the months coming out of the worst part of the pandemic but seems to be fitting for the uncertain times we again find ourselves in. It’s a book about recognition of the light we all carry. This resonates with our adopted name of Christian or little Christ. Although this book is not explicitly about faith, I have felt at times when reading it that, in the same way that the author is able to lead us through seeing herself through her parents’ eyes, this book can also be an exploration of seeing ourselves as God sees us: unconditionally cherished and full of worth. In this she raises the point that the recognition of self value can be the bedrock of community – “one light feeds another”. Let me know if you would like to borrow it when I have finished it.
