Saturday’s Jazz at St Giles’: Tommasso Starace Trio
Saxophonist Tommaso Starace last played at St Giles’ in December 2019, the Pandemic intervened, but now and by popular demand, we can welcome him back to Oxford with his trio on Saturday 12th October at 7:30pm.
Rev Patrick Hobson
John Pusey writes:
We are sad to hear of the death last weekend (29 September) of Rev Patrick Hobson, aged 91, who attended services at St Giles’ for a few years in the early 2000’s, and at the time of his death was still living together with his wife Penny in Cunliffe Close, off the Woodstock Road. Patrick’s first career had been in the Colonial Service in Kenya, where he became a District Officer, but from which had to retire when Kenya became independent. He then obtained ordination as a priest, becoming Vicar of Waltham Abbey in Essex. When he retired from church ministry, he and Penny moved to Oxford, where among other things he learnt to ring bells at St Giles’; and after he had given up tower-bell ringing, they both continued for some further time ringing changes on handbells at home during occasional visits from Oxford ringers.
The funeral will be in St Andrew’s Church, Linton Road, at 10:00 on Saturday 19th October.
We shall be ringing the bells at St Giles’ after the morning service this Sunday 6th October, with Patrick in mind, and probably half-muffled.
Piano Concert from Zihan Wang
Former St Giles’ Organ Scholar, Zihan Wang, returns to give a piano concert on Saturday 19 October, 19:30. Including Beethoven, Piano Sonata 17 in D Minor Op. 31 and J S Bach, Partita for keyboard No. 2 in C minor, BWV 826. Tickets available soon.
Next Jazz at St Giles’: Philip Clouts Quartet
We are thrilled to be able to welcome back Philip Clouts and his quartet. They played contemporary jazz with world music influences in Oxford for the first time in October 2023 to great acclaim. By popular demand, they return on Saturday 26th October at 7:30pm.
Choral Evensongs
Choral Evensongs have resumed at 6:30pm each Sunday evening at St Giles’.
These will usually be accompanied by one of St Giles’ choirs, except for Sunday 6 October which will feature St Margaret’s choir instead.
St Margaret’s Cook Book
The St Margaret’s Cook Book is now available – the best way to purchase it to support the church is either to get the hard copy in person from Cara Thomas, or get the e-book from Amazon. The church would like to thank everyone who worked to make the book happen.
St Margaret’s Parish Mapping
From Claire:
I am preparing (well in advance!) for the delivering of Christmas Cards in the Benefice this year. We have a list of the number of houses on each street of St Giles’ Parish but I do not currently have an equivalent for St Margaret’s Parish. If anyone has such a list, I would be very grateful for it! If you live in the parish and would be willing to count the number of properties in your road that would also be really helpful!

Tea & Talks
This series of Tea & Talks at the St Margaret’s Institute continues on Wednesday 6th November at 1:30pm with a talk on The butcher, the tailor, the picture-frame maker: stories of Middle Way from Gareth Winrow, academic and author of a book of the same name. Tickets are £2 on the door.
Drop-in Quiet Day
Old Parsonage, Freeland OX29 8AJ. An opportunity to explore a time of quiet in the beautiful, peaceful setting of the guest house of the Community of St Clare, Freeland. No booking is needed – just drop in for all or part of the day. 10am – 4pm

Small correction re Rev Patrick Hobson:
Cunliffe Close, where Patrick and his wife were living until his recent death, is of course off the Banbury Road, not the Woodstock Road.
